A cultured motor neuron (red) on a monolayer of astrocytes (green). These neurons have calcium-permeable AMPA-type glutamate receptors and are vulnerable to excitotoxicity: damage from excessive calcium influx. Astrocytes induce motor neurons to express a receptor subunit that prevents calcium entry. See the article by Van Damme et al. on pages 14825–14830.
